Germany will support a UN resolution reaffirming Palestinian statehood under international law, though it stops short of formal recognition, Berlin said.

At the United Nations General Assembly later this month, Britain, France, Canada, Australia, and Belgium have all declared their intention to recognize a Palestinian state; however, London stated that it could delay its recognition if Israel were to take action to alleviate the humanitarian situation in Gaza and pledge to a long-term peace process.

“Germany will support such a resolution which simply describes the status quo in international law,”

the spokesman said, adding that Berlin

“has always advocated a two-state solution and is asking for that all the time.”
“The chancellor just mentioned two days ago again that Germany does not see that the time has come for the recognition of the Palestinian state,”

the spokesman added.

Any attempt by its European partners to acknowledge Palestinian independence is met with strong opposition from the United States.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated last week that the United States has warned other nations that recognizing a Palestinian state will lead to greater issues.

The low impact and minimal presence on the ground of nations like China, India, Russia, and other Arab states who have recognized Palestinian independence for decades are cited by some who view recognition as primarily a symbolic gesture.

How will Germany's support affect the UN General Assembly vote?

Germany, as a powerful and influential EU member with strong diplomatic weight, backing the resolution adds credibility and momentum to the initiative, encouraging other countries to support it.

Germany’s endorsement may sway hesitant EU states and other Western countries that look to Berlin for leadership on international law and diplomatic matters, increasing the resolution’s chances of broad backing.

Germany’s position helps build a larger coalition of moderate countries that support reaffirmation of Palestinian statehood within existing international legal frameworks without pushing for immediate formal recognition, creating room for consensus.
