The new Ukraine peace plan has raised concerns about U.S. commitment to international law and European security, prompting scrutiny from diplomats.
The European Parliament doesn't hash words and, in a resolution suggested (November 27) by a wide maturity, criticizes Washington's" political ambivalence," which is" mischievous to the thing of long- term peace."
The resolution on the EU's position on the Ukraine peace plan was produced by five parties gauging the political diapason rightists and Reformists( ECR), European People's Party( EPP), Renew, communists and Egalitarians (S&D), and Greens.
It received support from 401 MEPs. Almost all of Patriots for Europe and Europe of Sovereign Nations, the two ultra-right factions, as well as The Left, the radical left group, voted against and abstained. Only the Lega and Movimento 5 Stelle delegations in Italy voted against the measure.
While acknowledging "the efforts of the US administration" to stop the fighting, the EU Parliament criticizes "Washington's political ambivalence towards Kyiv." That's why the text reads that the Strasbourg Chamber
"urges the EU and its member states to show leadership in this crucial geopolitical moment,"
in order to "continue to work with the United States and like-minded partners," to verify "that negotiations for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine are grounded in the principles of international law" as well as "are conducted in good faith."
MEPs repeated the principles on which any peace accord should be based, echoing what European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated in the Chamber yesterday.
According to Lucia Annunziata, an MEP elected on the Democratic Party's lists,
"the exclusion of Europe from the negotiating table has served to find unprecedented unity in Parliament, with clarity and commitments that had not been seen until now."
Yet," she cautioned,
"we must not hide from the reality that a plan provided by the United States is being considered in retrospect, in which the European participation in the negotiations is not apparent for the time being."
The 5 Star Movement delegation blamed the resolution as
"a clumsy attempt to put a spoke in the wheel of the ongoing peace process"
because it establishes criteria that
" make accommodations delicate, if not insolvable."
How have Ukraine and EU leaders publicly responded to the proposal?
Ukraine, represented by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has expressed an amenability to work with the US on the plan, emphasizing the need for a" good peace" that honors Ukrainian quality and sovereignty. Zelenskyy conceded the complications and challenge of the plan, noting that Ukraine must balance its public interests with the realities of seeking peace.
Ukrainian officers have been cooperating with US and European counterparts on enriching the frame but remain conservative about any territorial concessions.
EU leaders, including numbers like UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, have intimately abstain from openly censuring the plan to maintain political concinnity with the US but have made clear that the offer is a primary base taking significant concession and adaptations.
