Chrystia Freeland will move to Oxford next summer to take a senior role with the Rhodes Trust, the charity confirmed, marking a major career transition.
The organization is well-known for providing students from all over the world with the opportunity to attend the University of Oxford through the famed Rhodes Scholarship.
It said on Wednesday night that Freeland will take over as CEO of the Rhodes Trust on July 1.
Earlier this year, the longtime Toronto MP and former finance minister ran for the leadership of the Liberal Party but was defeated by Mark Carney, who went on to become prime minister.
Freeland spearheaded an effort to lower internal trade barriers in Canada while serving as both the minister of internal trade and the minister of transportation in Carney's government.
In September, she resigned from her ministerial positions to assume a special function as the Carney government's representative on issues pertaining to Ukraine's rehabilitation.
How will Freeland's appointment affect the Rhodes Scholarship selection process?
The Rhodes Scholarship selection is grounded on criteria outlined by Cecil Rhodes, including erudite and educational attainments, leadership eventuality, courage, and commitment to service. Selection panels operate encyclopedically within constituencies, with opinions ratified by the Rhodes Trustees.
She's anticipated to lead efforts to expand access to education worldwide, strengthen the support network for scholars, and foster the Rhodes community’s part in global public affairs.
The core principles and rigorous merit- grounded selection norms remain firm, icing literacy continue to award excellence, character, and service. Freeland's stewardship will probably involve strategic leadership to contemporize and broaden the education's reach while upholding its major values and selection integrity.
