A UK defence minister warns a Russian spy ship that targeted RAF pilots with lasers poses a threat to Britain’s economy, security, and overall way of life.

When the Yantar was discovered operating near the northern coast of Scotland, Al Carns launched an attack, aiming lasers at the surveillance planes that were keeping an eye on it.

He told MPs that although no one was hurt, the action was a

"highly dangerous and reckless attempt to disrupt our surveillance."

In a defiant message to Moscow, he added:

“We will not let the Yantar go unchallenged as it attempts to survey our infrastructure, and we will work with our allies to ensure that Russia knows that any attempt to disrupt or damage underwater infrastructure will be met with the firmest of responses.”

However, the shadow defense secretary, James Cartlidge, cautioned that this was

"a serious escalation by Russian forces in close proximity to our homeland."

The government is allegedly" Russophobic" and" whipping up militaristic fever," according to the Russian delegacy in the UK.

According to the Ministry of Defense, the boat is

"designed to have capabilities which can take over surveillance in reconciliation in conflict"

and is a part of a Russian program run by the Main Directorate of Deep- Sea Research.

He said:

“We take it extremely seriously. I've changed the navy’s rules of engagement so that we can follow more closely, monitor more closely, the activities of the Yantar when it’s in our wider waters.
We have military options ready should the Yantar change course. I’m not going to reveal those because that only makes President Putin wiser.”

Defense Secretary John Healey stated on Wednesday that the UK was prepared to react if the ship moved south from its current location and was investigating military options if it approached British borders.

Following a critical new report by MPs warning that Britain is not prepared to protect itself from a massive assault, the laser attack came to light.

In the wake of Putin's war in Ukraine, the Commons defence commission transferred a clear warning regarding the UK's capacity to fight a war and fulfil its liabilities under NATO, stating that the country now lacks a plan to defend itself.

How has the UK military responded operationally to the incident?

The Ministry of Defence has stated that military options remain ready to be stationed, emphasizing a preparedness to respond assertively if the situation escalates. RAF aviators have been briefed on the trouble of ray targeting, and fresh safeguards have been put in place to cover aircraft and crew.

Intelligence and defense agencies are assessing the implicit trouble posed by the boat’s conditioning, particularly its attempts to collude critical aquatic structure. This functional posture forms part of a broader UK strategy to discourage hostile Russian maritime conditioning near its territorial waters and within NATO zones.

The UK government has issued clear warnings to Russia, motioning a strong station but emphasizing that military engagement would follow transnational law and be a measure of last resort.
