Canada declines to join Gaza press freedom statement

Canada refrains from backing global statements urging Israel to allow foreign journalists into Gaza and protect local press in Palestinian territories.

Canada has signed dozens of declarations on issues in Sudan, Hong Kong, and the former West Bank. In 2020, Canada co-founded the Media Freedom Coalition.

Ottawa, however, is not one of the 27 nations who are calling on Israel to permit "independent foreign media access" into Gaza and to provide protection for journalists in both Israel and the Palestinianterritories.

When asked why it isn't included in today's letter, Global Affairs Canada did not immediately respond. The only other instance in which Canada did not sign a multi-country statement from the coalition was during the 2021 election campaign.

The announcement follows condemnations by Canada and other countries that Israel killed journalist Anas Al-Sharif on purpose after he claimed to have commanded a Hamas cell.

In a separate joint statement today, Canada also denounces Israel's approval of plans to construct settlements that would divide Jerusalem from the West Bank and limit Palestinian access to the city.

How does Canada's non-signing of the statement reflect its foreign policy stance?

Canada officially emphasizes respect for international law and human rights but often takes positions that avoid direct confrontation with Israel. It tends to support Israel's right to self-defense while expressing concern over humanitarian issues, leading to abstentions or nuanced positions in multilateral settings rather than outright condemnation.

Canada's foreign policy aligns closely with allies like the United States and the United Kingdom, often joining them in abstaining from or opposing resolutions perceived as critical of Israel, reflecting strategic and diplomatic priorities.

Canada supports multilateralism and international institutions but exercises caution regarding binding or politically charged statements that might complicate diplomatic relations or domestic considerations.
