Donald Trump renewed attacks on Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Rep. Ilhan Omar after his administration froze federal childcare funding to the state.

Walz criticized the administration's decision to halt childcare funds to the state on X, claiming that Trump is

"using an issue he doesn't give a damn about as an excuse to hurt working Minnesotans,"

just hours before Trump's divisive letters.

“Much of the Minnesota Fraud, up to 90%, is caused by people that came into our Country, illegally, from Somalia,”

Trump alleged in a post on Truth Social, calling Omar “an ungrateful loser who only complains and never contributes, is one of the many scammers”.

Trump continued his tirade against the representative, repeating a smear that Omar had married her brother:

“Lowlifes like this can only be a liability to our Country’s greatness. Send them back from where they came, Somalia, perhaps the worst, and most corrupt, country on earth.”

The president continued:

“Tim Waltz of Minnesota is a Crooked Governor!!!” and sought to tie California in with his criticism of Minnesota.
There is more FRAUD in California than there is in Minnesota, if that is even possible,”

he wrote.

“When you add in Election Fraud, then they are tied for first. Two Crooked Governors, two Crooked States!”

Walz claimed that the decision made late on Tuesday by Jim O'Neill, the deputy secretary of the Department of Health and Human assistance, to halt childcare payments to the state in response to growing claims of fraud in its social assistance programs was a political ploy.

YouTuber Nick Shirley revealed alleged fraud at Somali American daycare services in Minneapolis during the Christmas break, which is one of the main points of contention. Shirley uploaded a video of himself confronting employees at daycare facilities funded by the state since there didn't seem to be enough enrolled kids.

However, the movie, which has received over 100 million views, has come under fire for misrepresenting claims of fraud schemes that were known to exist under the Biden administration.

Trump and other high-ranking administration officials have used the issue as a powerful political cudgel. The decision to halt daycare payments is one of the

"most important steps we can take to end the fraud in Minnesota,"

according to a Tuesday post on X by JD Vance.

In relation to the extensive fraud investigation, which involves companies that have been falsely billing programs under the Minnesota Department of Human Services (MDHS) since 2022, the justice department says it has charged 98 individuals. Prosecutors have stated that Somali Americans make up the majority of the defendants.

According to Justice Department authorities, "half or more" of the $18 billion that has been billed to 14 agencies under the MDHS since 2018 is false; however, court documents examined by the Minnesota Star Tribune suggest that the alleged fraud is more like $218 million.

In a video statement, O'Neill said that "blatant fraud that appears to be rampant in Minnesota and across the country" was the reason behind the funding halt. We are identifying the fraud and have shut off the money spigot.

Some estimates place the suspected theft in Minnesota at $9 billion, which is a tiny portion of the estimated $400 billion in Covid relief funds that went missing or were misused in 2023, according to the Associated Press.

However, it has given Trump a chance to intensify his conflict with Walz and Omar as part of a broader administration campaign against immigrant benefits. Omar has spoken out against ICE raids in Minneapolis and advised people not to hold the entire community responsible for the conduct of a small number of people.

Omar referred to Operation Metro Surge as "state-sanctioned racial profiling used as a tool of political intimidation" earlier this month. However, Somali Minnesotans don't feel threatened. Their neighbors support them, and they are courageous and strong. Bullies do not intimidate us.

What reasons did the administration give for the funding freeze?

The Trump administration justified inducting Minnesota's civil childcare backing by citing substantiation of wide fraud in the state's programs, particularly involving Somali American- run daycare centers.

HHS Deputy Secretary Jim O'Neill refocused to a viral conservative YouTuber's disquisition, professing up to $100 million in fraudulent claims, including fake attendance records and unlicensed installations, echoing the previous$ 300 million Feeding Our unborn reproach that led to 57 persuasions.

The snap, affecting $185 million for 19,000 children, requires Minnesota to submit detailed checkups of registration data, provider licenses, and examinations before continuing payments, framed as guarding taxpayer ones amid" systemic abuse."
