U.S. immigration officials have launched a sweeping review
of green card holders from “countries of concern,” signaling heightened
security scrutiny.
Edlow stated that defending the country "remains paramount" and that
"the American people will not bear the cost of the prior administration's reckless resettlement policies."
“At the direction of @POTUS, I have directed a full scale, rigorous reexamination of every Green Card for every alien from every country of concern,”
USCIS Director Joseph Edlow said Thursday afternoon in a statement on X.
USCIS did not immediately respond to a request for
information on which nations are deemed "of concern."
The action comes only one day after two National Guard men
were critically injured in a shooting near the White House. According to
federal authorities, the defendant, an Afghan national who previously supported
American forces, was resettled in the United States as part of the Biden
administration's Operation Allies Welcome program following the US pullout from
Afghanistan in 2021.
Following the attack, two West Virginia National Guard
personnel, Sarah Beckstrom (20) and Andrew Wolfe (24), remain in critical
condition. They were in Washington as part of President Trump's deployment of
federal troops to various American cities.
In a video issued by the White House, Trump described the
attack as an "act of terror" and said that extra National Guard
troops would be deployed to Washington.
The administration announced
that all immigration requests for Afghan nationals would be stopped
indefinitely.
What legal processes allow revocation of an issued green card?
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services( USCIS) or
Immigration and Customs Enforcement( ICE) begins cancellation if the green card
holder is suspected of violating immigration laws, similar as fraud in carrying
the card, felonious conditioning, abandonment of occupancy, or public security
pitfalls.
These include carrying occupancy through misrepresentation
or fraud, committing serious crimes( e.g., exacerbated felonies, crimes
involving moral turpitude), spending extended ages outside the U.S. without re-entry
permits( abandonment), or involvement in conditioning mischievous to public
security.
The individual receives a Notice to Appear( NTA) in immigration court and can be detained pending a hail. They've the right to present substantiation or defense but are responsible for their legal costs as there's no guaranteed public attorney.
