A new US national security strategy warns Europe faces “civilisational erasure” without sharp migration cuts, igniting debate across EU political circles.

The 29-page report predicts that if current trends continue, the Continent could be "unrecognisable in 20 years or less," with many countries potentially becoming "majority non-European."

Europe's immigration policies are "creating strife, censorship of free speech and suppression of political opposition," according to the strategy document outlining the Trump administration's global priorities.

Additionally, it claims that "cratering birthrates" in Europe are causing "loss of national identities and self-confidence."

It raises concerns about whether European countries with such large rates of inward migration will adhere to the common values of the NATO alliance, "or their alliance with the United States," in the same manner as those that signed the NATO charter.

In response, Washington plans to "cultivate resistance to Europe's current trajectory within European nations" and sees potential allies in the "growing influence of patriotic European parties," which are assumed to include Giorgia Meloni's Brothers of Italy, Marine Le Pen's National Rally in France, Vox in Spain, Reform in the UK, and the AFD in Germany.

European diplomats gasped at the idea that the White House would try to support opposition parties who match its values rather than cooperate with whatever governments are in power.

“This is JD Vance on steroids,”

said Carl Bildt, the former prime minister of Sweden, referring to the US vice president’s castigating speech on European politics at the Munich Security Conference in February.

The White House has the authority to publish the National Security Strategy, which seems to accuse European countries of obstructing peace in Ukraine.

The Trump administration

"finds itself at odds with European officials who hold unrealistic expectations for the war perched in unstable minority governments, many of which trample on basic principles of democracy to suppress opposition."

Due to allegations of Russian meddling, Romania canceled a presidential election with a pro-Kremlin favorite last year, drawing criticism from the White House.

In a call with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, NATO commander Mark Rutte, and Finnish President Alexander Stubbe earlier this week, Emmanuel Macron expressed concerns that the US would "betray" Ukraine, according to a leaked transcript.

A number of minority administrations have failed to adopt a budget, and the French president has failed to shepherd the country out of a raging political crisis.

In the past, Ms. Le Pen has threatened to reduce funding to Kyiv. The White House denounced a court decision earlier this year that prohibited the three-time presidential candidate from contesting in the race, pending an appeal, after she was found guilty of embezzling money from the European Parliament.

The White House statement claims that “a large European majority wants peace, yet that desire is not translated into policy, in large measure because of those governments’ subversion of democratic processes”.

Additionally, it seems to embrace Russia's perspective on the detrimental effects of NATO expansion, which is one of the justifications offered by Vladimir Putin for the unlawful invasion of Ukraine.

America will work to "end the perception, and prevent the reality, of NATO as a perpetually expanding alliance," according to the strategy's vision. This suggests a confrontation with European officials eager to include Moldova in the bloc.

Reports that the US wants Europe to take over the majority of NATO defense by 2027 coincided with the strategy's introduction.

American officials informed their European counterparts that they would need to assume command of intelligence, missile manufacturing, and force deployments.

Reuters was informed by a number of European officials that the short timeline was impractical for such a significant change.

The news agency claims that if the deadline is not reached, Washington has threatened to leave some NATO defense coordination institutions.

According to the memo, gaining more authority over the "Western hemisphere" will be the Trump administration's top objective when it comes to international security. In a blow to China hawks who had thought that Mr. Trump would firmly position Washington against Beijing, it defines an "America first" foreign strategy, refocusing attention on the United States' immediate surroundings.

China is referenced in the strategy, but it is not as important as South America or Europe. It declares,

"We cannot afford to be equally attentive to every region and every problem in the world,"

contrasting the approach with earlier incarnations that, according to the statement, lost focus because they felt obligated to address every security concern on the planet.

The United States will collaborate with cooperative governments in South America "against narco-terrorists, cartels, and other transnational criminal organizations." The White House is launching a military pressure campaign to remove Nicolas Maduro, the president of Venezuela, on the grounds that he is involved in a drug trafficking scheme that aims to kill Americans.

In strikes on small boats it claims were smuggling drugs, the administration has been charged with carrying out extrajudicial executions.

Recalling the administration's attempts to remove China from control of important ports along the Panama Canal, the memo states that Washington desires a "hemisphere that remains free of hostile foreign incursion or ownership of key assets."

How might European migration policies be defensively reframed by officials?

European officers might defensively reframe migration programs as" fair and firm" philanthropic- security balances that fortify borders, accelerate returns, and mate with origin/ conveyance countries, emphasizing participation responsibility over unbridled insults criticized for" civilizational erasure."

Programs like the EU Pact on Migration would be recast as principled leadership upholding shelter rights while combating smuggling via enhanced scrutiny," safe third country" rules, and instantiation deals( e.g., Turkey/ Libya), rejecting US claims by pressing displacements doubled and irregular advents checked 40 since 2023 peaks.

Reframing stresses settlers'" integration eventuality" through resettlement tied to cooperation, portraying EU approaches as sustainable vs. US isolationism, with constructivist narratives shifting from" pitfalls" to profitable contributors amid labor dearths. This counters strategy reviews by affirming sovereignty via internal controls and time- limited border measures against instrumentalization.
