Netanyahu-backed Gaza plan heads to Cabinet

Summary

  • Netanyahu’s Gaza plan to present Thursday.
  • The plan includes new Gaza Strip occupations.
  • Involves five IDF divisions for five months.
  • Aim to defeat Hamas, secure hostages.
  • Some military chiefs oppose full takeover.

It is anticipated that the strategy will span roughly five months and involve roughly five IDF divisions. According to cabinet ministers who spoke to the Post, "the real question is what version of the plan will ultimately be approved." It would also entail the relocation of almost a million people in Gaza City and is expected to be approved on Thursday.

Despite his opposition to the plan, Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir, the IDF Chief of Staff, is anticipated to stay in his role and not step down. During a Tuesday debate, Zamir stated,

"The operation is a mistake and will endanger the hostages."

According to two sources who spoke to the Post, any strategy put out by the Trump administration will have a direct impact on how Israel's military operations in the enclave unfold and the plans that the security cabinet discusses on Thursday.

“The administration intends to significantly ramp up the amount of humanitarian aid being distributed,”

a source familiar with the talks told the Post.

“We’re working to try to feed the people in Gaza. Israel is supposed to help us with the distribution, both financially and logistically, as are Arab states,”

US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday.

In response to a question concerning the potential for Israel to annex Gaza, Trump stated that this would be "Israel's decision."

What are the main military strategies Netanyahu is considering for Gaza?

Netanyahu is reportedly planning for a "full occupation" or takeover of the entire Gaza Strip by Israeli forces. This means expanding the military operation to fully capture, control, and conquer the territory currently controlled by Hamas, reversing Israel's 2005 withdrawal from Gaza.

The plan may involve around five Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) divisions, engaging in intense ground operations expected to last approximately five months.

The initial military steps likely include surrounding central refugee camps, Gaza City, and neighborhoods suspected of holding Israeli hostages to isolate Hamas fighters and infrastructure.
